Rumors persist that the Flyers are actively trying to trade up from the 17th overall pick in the 2017 draft

Now that's some forward thinking!

I think they should stay put. If they plan on moving up, they better get exactly what they're looking for. Something tells me I'm not gonna like what they might give up to move up.

I would rather not watch the flyers than see this roster especially if those are the line combinations.

The opening day lines would look more like this, for the record

Fleischman-Giroux-Voracek
Umberger-Schenn-Simmonds
Raffl-Couturier-Read
Bellemare-Laughton-Rinaldo/McGinn/Akeson/Alderson

"There are a lot of feast-or-famine types in this Draft, and the safer picks may not have the highest ceilings," the scout said. "There are probably going to be quite a few busts but I also think there will be a fair share of really good players and even possibly some value picks who turn out to be impact players. A Draft like this requires a little lucky guesswork as well as a lot of homework and feel. It's never easy to project players three or five years from now, but this year is maybe a little tougher."
- bmeltzer

The above doesn't worry me too much in light of the Flyers am scouts history of sifting through the dreck and coming out with winners. 2006 was probably the best example... out of a sea of busts, they managed to fish out arguably the best player from that draft class.

With that said, I think they can still afford to move back to 20 or so and probably still get the player they want. I really wouldn't want them to spend too much effort in moving up this year... the risk/reward payoff doesn't seem to be there for the most part.

1. Dale Tallon has a history of doing dumb things, but that trade would be a doozy, even for him,

2. Gilbert just came off a year where he played like a $4M dman again. He's still young-ish... why would he accept 1/3 of what Nikitin just got?

3. Not sure Montoya is a guy that is good enough to carry the load if Mason goes down. I'd be more comfortable with Dubnyk on a show-me deal, or just re-signing Emery despite his PK SV% issues.

You can add Anthony DeAngelo to the list of kids who I hope the Flyers don't take.

I can't see rolling the dice on a smallish defenseman with what appear to be serious emotional and maturity issues.

The Flyers have too many needs to whiff badly on a 1st round pick.

Would you disagree with taking DeAngelo at 17 Bill? Seems high risk, huge reward prospect.

His character issues are a concern but may have been compounded by a player who hates to lose ppaying on an awful sarnia team.

The stuff he did, he did repeatedly, which would indicate some fundamental impulse-control, self-control, anger issues. Getting frustrated by losing is one thing... turning on your teammates and abusing officials on numerous occasions are pretty much the last thing you would want to do if you're interested in turning the ship around.

There is plenty of examples of players with questionable behaviour. I still dont know exactly what he did so Im not condoning anything. However, I trust if the Flyers do take him they have done thierhomework.

My big worry on DeAngelo is, the Flyers didn't exactly handle guys like that well in the past. Downie, Maroon & even Tony Voce. Now granted, Voce wasn't really much of a prospect, but Downie was a first rounder and Maroon had shown good potential.

I actually have fewer concerns about Ho Sang than I do about DeAngelo. If he's sitting there in round two, it's probably worth the dice role, but at 17 there should be better, safer players than DeAngelo.

I think if they move up it has to be for someone they have already targeted. If he isn't there I wouldn't mind moving 17 to a team wanting to try and gt back into the first round for say a 2015 1st rounder and maybe another pick like 2014 2nd or third rounder

Yeah, not sure they would have touched Downie if the Aliu thing had happened pre-draft. Flyers seem to prioritize character pretty highly.

Ho Sang is just brash and full of himself... that's a world away from the DeAngelo stuff.

Edit: Had to include this:

“The Leafs have said they want to move up to pick first,” Ho-Sang said.

“Well, they can stay at eight and still get the No. 1 pick.”

He was referring to himself.
